What changed
Version 0.40.1 replaces the generic update notice with a list of the actual changes. It identifies the wording correction separately from the offline release-notes popup added in version 0.40.
Start/Stop, speed, miles, impacts, Last Bump Level, battery, and upload status. The optional movement display remains off by default.
Review the last 10 completed drives saved on this phone and your lifetime accepted contribution totals.
Manage mounting, uploads, Wi-Fi-only, theme, screen behavior, privacy, and updates in Settings. Open Details for GPS, calibration, sensor health, and upload retries.
Read and acknowledge the driver-safety notice before your first drive in this version. Start while safely parked and keep your eyes on the road. No background driving reminders are added.
Version history
Each beta has made road measurements more dependable, easier to understand, and safer to collect.
Replaces the generic popup text with specific release changes and identifies the release-note features added in v0.40.
Shows release notes once per app version, with a Got it button. Notes are available offline. Keeps existing bump detection, calibration, drive history, settings and queued uploads.
Requests 100 motion readings per second instead of a generic sensor-speed preset. Actual delivery depends on the phone. Keeps the existing bump sensitivity, peak capture, mileage, and saved uploads.
Keeps the strongest bump reading through the full 300-millisecond capture interval. Separate bumps still require a fresh rise. The detection threshold, bump scale, mileage improvements, and saved-upload behavior are retained.
Improves trip mileage when location sources overlap, saves measurements before updating counters, and retains upload acceptance details. Bump sensitivity, timing, raw motion capture, and calibration stay the same.
Tests improved capture of brief road bumps, with the same physical cutoff, bump scale, GPS checks, and handling safeguards. Road-vibration calibration relearns automatically for the new feed.
Adds bounded private sensor comparisons to investigate why the same bump can register differently across phones. Keeps the existing bump scale and road detection.
Separates vehicle turning from sustained phone tilt, confirms orientation changes before pausing, and adds private handling diagnostics. Keeps existing bump sensitivity and ratings.
Individual bump levels use the measured vertical peak independently of road calibration. Reliable native GPS speed can avoid the extra movement-confirmation wait; uncertain readings retain confirmation and location safeguards. Keeps the fixed cutoff, close-hit detector, saved history, and diagnostics.
Uses a lower fixed bump cutoff independent of rating calibration, recognizes a fresh rise after a measured valley, and records limited private candidate traces to investigate missed hits.
Applies the same calibration to all bump strengths, removes the sudden rating jump at the strong-hit cutoff, and adds sensor details for paired-phone testing.
Learns only from recent GPS fixes with confirmed movement throughout the window. Excludes stale and creeping readings, and resets older calibration once.
Shows the last counted bump on the Drive screen. Distinct impacts can count sooner after movement settles; drive history retains the highest level.
Validates saved calibration after settled driving, treats fresh-calibration vibration conservatively, captures each impact peak, and keeps severe-hit grading from falling at a threshold boundary. GPS mileage and upload behavior are unchanged.
The expanded Drive layout now applies automatically. Removes the layout switch and keeps phone bars, app tabs, and scrolling available.
Adds an optional setting to enlarge Drive content and use the available screen height. Phone status/navigation bars and app tabs stay visible. Compact mode remains the default.
Introduces a compact three-tab interface aligned with iPhone v0.4.0, moves contributions and recent drives into History, and adds a saved driver-safety acknowledgment. Measurement and upload behavior are preserved.
Moves live MPH into the normal driving card, adds an optional center-dot movement display, and supports mounted Android/iPhone side-by-side sensor testing.
Adds Follow phone, Light and Dark appearance, a Wi-Fi-only upload preference, upload pause, and optional screen-awake controls. Settings stay saved and queued data is retained.
Fixes the stuck Fleet Starting flag, preserves active totals during automatic recovery, checks fresh motion-sensor delivery independently of road samples, explains offline/upload/retry status with queue age, and adds a charging indicator and quiet low-battery warning.
Resets visible Fleet statistics for a new collection session, moves status into the MPH card, promotes Last Impact, and adds safe stop, update, and resume controls without clearing queued uploads.
Removes stale hard-coded app versions from telemetry, contribution requests, and startup diagnostics so the admin dashboard receives the actual installed version automatically.
Centers the circular logo correctly and adds a persistent Mounted or Not mounted phone-placement option to normal Start Drive users.
Adds the circle-only logo, permanent mount badge, shorter stopped-state messaging, persistent last-impact history, and a 60-second motion graph with impact markers.
Adds a dedicated live Fleet Collector screen, mounted versus not-mounted setup, bump-safe movement filtering for secured phones, live road-motion graphing, and the current website logo.
Normalizes measurements using each phone's learned baseline ratio, refreshes the visible dashboard, preserves active-drive totals through service restarts, reports collector health, rejects stale GPS fixes, and prioritizes Level 5 uploads.
Learns each installation's normal vibration baseline, adjusts impact detection within safe limits, relearns after major orientation changes, and retains both raw and calibrated telemetry.
Stops rewriting saved queue files before sending them, preserving older pending batches while removing a local failure point, and reports the actual network, HTTP, or saved-file reason when a retry still cannot complete.
Retries every saved upload batch even if one fails, shows the last successful sync time, translates the strongest impact into the Suck Level scale, saves the last ten drive summaries, and adds server-authorized hands-off Fleet Collector mode for dedicated devices.
Hardened launch behavior for newer Samsung and Android devices, delayed optional network startup work, guarded lifecycle callbacks, and added a recovery screen with copyable crash details instead of an immediate close.
Added readable status-bar icons, plain-language upload status, a Retry Pending Uploads button, location-services warnings, clearer offline results, and more reliable update checks.
Added understandable lifetime totals for accepted miles, named roads helped, road measurements, possible rough spots, and the latest contribution received by Sucky Roads.
Added anonymous installation telemetry, expanded Privacy & Data details, and provided a manual Check for Updates button without collecting personal identifiers.
Cleared a completed drive from the screen after the app was closed and reopened, while safely preserving any road batches still waiting to upload.
Added an update check at launch with an Update button, making it easier for private testers to install the newest beta while parked.
Changed road detection to gravity-aligned up-and-down movement. The phone can sit flat, upright, sideways, or angled and recalibrates after it settles.
Waited for accurate GPS and sustained vehicle movement, paused while stopped or creeping, and ignored readings when the phone was picked up or moved.
Added the Sucky Roads logo and updated branding, then combined the separate drive controls into one clear Start Drive or Stop Drive button.
Added the first-drive privacy notice, Privacy & Data controls, persistent offline uploads, duplicate-safe retry protection, GPS status, data deletion controls, and an end-of-drive summary.
Grouped road events into bandwidth-saving batches, tracked Wi-Fi versus cellular uploads, and added understandable network-usage totals for testing future fleet use.
Introduced Start Drive and Stop Drive, background measuring while the phone is locked, GPS and motion collection, a live drive summary, and automatic uploads using a random installation ID.
Updating from an earlier beta
Open the installer link in Chrome while parked, download the APK, and approve the update when Android asks. You do not need to uninstall your current Sucky Roads app first.
The Android beta is now open to anyone. Check this page for the newest public beta build.
Install & test
While parked, use Stop Collection & Check for Update, or stop a normal drive before installing v0.40.1 over the existing app. Do not uninstall or clear app data. Fleet authorization, phone-placement setting, saved drives, and queued uploads remain in place. Your existing road-vibration calibration is kept; individual bump levels keep the same fixed scale. The update starts a fresh displayed drive at zero; automatic sensor or service recovery during a drive keeps its totals. Reopen the app after installation and use Resume Collection if it remains paused.
Calibration beta: these first drives are for tuning road detection and measuring real-world bandwidth. Do not operate the app while driving.
